Which TENS Machine Should You Use to Treat a Tennis Elbow?

[Product relevance last revised: 4th of September 2018]

So you want to find a TENS machines as a treatment for lateral epicondylitis or most commonly known as “tennis elbow”.

This condition is an inflammation of the tendons that connect the forearm muscles and this usually a result from overusing the elbow by playing racquet games or any activities that involve frequent use of the forearm.

When resting or icing your elbow can’t relieve the pain anymore, the use of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation or TENS machine is recommended as it is a non-expensive option for physical therapy. TENS machines work by sending electronic stimulating pulses across the surface of the skin through the nerves and by helping your body release more endorphins or natural “painkillers”.

To give you a list of my top picks, I give you 5 TENS machines to use for tennis elbow by order of their functionality, quality, and price.

The amazing combination of TENS and PMS qualities makes this device a great handheld pain reliever to those who are suffering from tennis elbow.

This unit has 15 massage modes, 20 intensity levels, 4 outputs to choose from with independent intensity control, and 80 minutes default timer.

The 6 therapeutic methods allow you to choose among your most preferred massage technique: kneading, acupuncture, tapping, cupping, random, and scraping. The 2 independent channels A1/A2 and B1/B2 outputs allow you to distribute the 8 pads on different elbows simultaneously.

To adjust the intensity level, just press the + button on the side of the device to increase the strength and – button to decrease.

At a very affordable price, this budget TENS unit can treat a tennis elbow and is a great alternative for costly physical therapy for tennis elbow rehabilitation.

At the lowest price possible, TENS 7000 offers quick and easy treatment for your tennis elbow with its upgraded digital processor. It has dual channels with 2 pads each to cater your elbows at different intensity levels simultaneously.

To choose among the 5 therapy modes, just press the mode button of the device and select normal, burst, modulation, and strength-duration 1 and 2.

Increase or decrease the intensity/power level using the thumbwheel dials above the screen of the device. You can also adjust the pulse amplitude, pulse rate, pulse width, and the waveform of the unit to accommodate your therapy needs.

This TENS Machine’s high-end digital design looks expensive yet this actually works well, if not better for treating a tennis elbow, as much as the conventional massage therapies can.

Perhaps the finest TENS unit I have ever encountered, the Omron Max Power Relief is a modified model of their previous Pain Pro Relief which only offered 10 intensity levels. Now with 15 powerful levels of intensity, the Max Power Relief can reach deep muscle and nerve pains that no ordinary massage therapy can.

It has 6 default pain modes; just tap the arm setting on the screen to begin your rehabilitation after placing the pads on the affected elbow areas. Using this TENS Machines on the elbow couldn’t be much easier!

Select among tap, knead, or rub massage modes before you adjust the speed or intensity level. It is also recommended that you record your pain level before you use this TENS unit to appropriately adjust it after one session.

Although the electrode pads of this TENS unit is priced higher than others, its quality is known to last up to 150 uses.

This TENS Machine is made with therapeutic qualities, comfort, and convenience in mind, and this truly stands out among other TENS unit.

Is It Safe to Use a TENS Machine on a Tennis Elbow?

Yes! You can use a TENS Unit even if you have an elbow injury such as the tennis elbow.

The following are general guidelines in using a TENS unit. For brand-specific instructions, refer to your unit’s manual.

  1. Units should be off before inserting the required batteries.
  2. Attach the cord at the bottom of each pad.
  3. Be sure that your skin is clean and dry before applying electrode pads.
  4. Remove the plastic that covers the adhesive area of the pads when it’s your first time to use them and place them around the affected areas. Two pads must be put 1 inch away from each other.
  5. Switch the unit on and select a massage mode and intensity level. Choose an intensity which is strong but bearable. As your body accommodates to its strength, increase the intensity level after the first session.

How Often Should You Use a TENS Machine for Tennis Elbow Rehabilitation?

TENS machines can be used on your elbows for a standard safe timer of 30 minutes each session and with sessions, not more than 3 times a day.

Depending on the severity of the pain, you can adjust the time for up to 2 hours but not more than that.

Can a TENS Machine make my Tennis Elbow Worse?

Highly unlikely. Unless you are extremenly uncautios with how you use it.

How Do You Clean The Electrode Pads?

Remove the pads from the cords and clean them with mild soap and running water for several seconds. Do not wipe the pads with tissue or cloth.

Wait for them to be completely dried up before connecting it to the unit again.

Recommended washes are 10 times after the 10th use. Do not wash the pads regularly as this can damage the adhesive.

How to Deal with Skin Irritation After Using a TENS Machine?

If you have a severe skin disease, do not use TENS machine unless permitted by your dermatologist. Clean your skin first with gentle soap and water but NOT with alcohol. Pat your skin dry before placing the pads.

After removing the pads, clean your skin again with soap and water and apply an aloe vera gel or soothing cream to deal with irritation.

DO NOT apply lotion or cream before placing your pads as it can lessen the adhesiveness of the pads.

How to Place the Electrode Pads for a Tennis Elbow injury

I wrote a complete and comprehensive in-depth guide on placement of the electrode pads, but to handle pain related to the elbow, the electrode pads should be placed on the outside of the elbow as the image suggests.

Two pads are enough in treating your tennis elbow, but if you have more pads to spare, you can put one on the inside of the joint as well.

For treating the upper part of the forearm as well, extend any pad vertically to reach out on the forearm to “triangulate” the area of pain.

User Impressions

This section involves what people think about the 5 mentioned products. Reviews usually revolved around their functionality, price, and quality.

HealthMate Forever YK15AB TENS Unit

This product has an incredible 20 varied intensity level choices which are useful to intermediate or advanced users. Its 6 massage options are also helpful and mirror that of a physical therapist’s techniques. Users’ #1 problem about this unit is the lack of a carrying bag.

TENS 7000 2nd Edition Digital TENS Unit

Users of TENS 7000 admittedly know this product’s high-end device quality which is very agreeable due to the product’s low cost. The only complaint about this product is its bulky carrying case which is large and noticeable.

Omron Max Power Relief TENS Unit

This unit relieves tennis elbow and its free pads are incomparable. However, some users complained about this device’s inability to combine the massage and preset modes.

NURSAL TENS Unit

This unit is a great pain management device at a very affordable price. The settings are easy to navigate and the buttons are readable. Some users, however, wished it to be of cellphone size because it is longer than the regular pocket length.

Pure Enrichment PurePulse TENS Unit

A highly affordable product with bearable pulse intensities, users chose this product as an option to costly therapies. The main problem with this product is the pads which are quick to lose adhesiveness.

Concluding this Tennis Elbow with TENS machine Guide!

Out of 52 products that I reviewed for more than 8 hours, the HealthMate Forever YK15AB TENS Unit became my top pick as it has the most outstanding quality and performance at a reasonable price.

This unit, with its pocket-size portability and high-intensity levels, works great for those who are experiencing the soreness of having tennis elbows or other muscle pains.

If you are looking for a substitute therapy that won’t rip off your wallet, the TENS machines that I mentioned here have the capabilities of relieving different pain levels just as the regular massage therapy can.
